Innovative Online Competitions

EXPLORING THE ENVELOPE

ACADIA competitions break new ground. Our first, in 1998, was one of the first online competitions in which competitors mounted web sites where they could; submitting the URL to the competition via an online submission scheme. The Jurying process was also carried out online. Our second competition, in 2001, explored the premise that the participants themselves knew more about the project than outside jurors and would make the best judges. Entrants thus served as both competitors and jurors! The current 2007 competition continues this tradition with an innovative online web site that includes software vendor support for digital tools used in the competition, a discussion forum, voting sessions, and peer-to-peer interaction. This multi-level exchange between peers and sponsors will make for a rich, stimulating experience.

The winners of the competition will be determined by the competitors themselves in a democratic process held over the Internet. More information...

2001: THE BERLIN INFORUM

In this competition winners were determined through a process of online voting among the participants, rather than selected by an external jury. The design subject was the Inforum, a civic and commercial information center in Berlin.

1998: LIBRARY FOR THE INFORMATION AGE

The 1998 competition involved the design of a library taking full advantage of information technology while still serving the library's inherited roles in culture and society. The jury included James Glymph, William Mitchell, Tom Mayne, Greg Lynn, and Robert Ivy.
