HDTV Plasma Display

A wall-hanging TV display for Hi-Vision

DC Plasma Display for Wall-hanging HDTV display

Large displays are indispensable to high-definition TV (HDTV,Hi-Vision) in order for viewers to enjoy the full realistic effects of the system. A wall-hanging TV which takes up little space is regarded as the most desirable kind of HDTV receiver. Among many types of flat-panel display, DC plasma display panels are thought to be as the most suitable because of its ease to fabricate large panels and ability to reproduce high quality pictures. NHK Science and Technical Research Laboratories are conducting research and development on large HDTV PDPs and recently developed experimental 40-inch HDTV PDPs with both high luminance and a long lifetime.

Features of DC Plasma Display Panels

  1. Wide Viewing Angle (Over 140 degrees in both the horizontal and vertical directions)
  2. Fast Response Time (4us for each line access)
  3. High Color Purity (Equivalent three primary colors to those of CRT)
  4. Ease of Fabricating Large Panels (No use for thin film process)

An Experimental 40-inch HDTV Plasma Display

The introduction of two new structures, the resistor-in-cell and the phosphor-on-wall, improved the luminance and the lifetime to a practical level. Newly developed photolithography and sandblasting techniques have made it possible to fabricate 40-inch panels with high accuracy.

Development Schedule for Large-area PDPs

1998
(in time for the Nagano Winter Olympic Games) Development of practical 40-inch PDP receiver (2-million cells)
1999
Development of prototype 55-inch PDP receiver (5-million cells)
